Toshiba has dumped its Thrive line of tablets in order to throw all of its chips behind the Excite, a thinner, aluminum alloy body that’s half the size and twice as appealing as the bloated rubber builds previously seen. While we’ve already seen the 10-inch model and liked it upon first impression, we’re more interested in learning more about the 13 and 7.7 inch Excite tablets set to arrive later this year.
The Toshiba Excite 13 and 7.7 have common elements in their design and software. Both devices have aluminum exteriors and scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass displays, quad-core Tegra 3 processors with 4-Plus-1 architecture, and Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) software powering it all. Where they differ is the screen size.
TOSHIBA EXCITE 13
The Excite 13 is the largest consumer tablet that I’ve seen. It dwarfed other tablets when it was hidden behind a display a CES, but it was an impressively large tablet, not a thick one. At 2.2 pounds and 0.4 inches thin, it’s possible to still use as a mobile device, but the tablet is designed more for home entertainment use.
The large 13 inch screen is ideal for watching video on a 1600 x 900 resolution (16:9 aspect ratio), SRS Labs four-speaker sound system, Micro HDMI, Micro USB, full SD slot, and 13 hours of battery life. The Excite is pitched as something to put on the kitchen, dining table, or while sitting on the couch.
The tablet will go on sale June 10, 2012 for $649 (16GB) or $749 (32 GB).
TOSHIBA EXCITE 7.7
The Excite 7.7 is a little more practical as an on-the-go device. The 7.7 inch AMOLED screen shows gamers, movies, books, and other material well. And at 0.3 inches and 13.4 ounces, it’s much easier to carry with you outside the home.
Toshiba’s standard suite of apps, a Tegra 3 processor, 1 GB of memory, a micro USB port, and a Micro SD slot are all present in the Excite 7.7. The tablet will go on sale June 10, 2012 for $499 (16 GB) or $579 (32 GB).
TOSHIBA EXCITE 10
Toshiba also announced pricing and availability for the previously covered Toshiba Excite 10. It will go on sale May 6 for $449.99 (16GB) or $529.99 (32GB).
